Comfortable and Contemporary Adirondack Chair – Pattern or Custom

Our modern Adirondack chair has been designed for looks and comfort. Everyone loves the look of a nice Adirondack Chair – but few think they are comfortable. Well, that would be me! Plus, often they sit so low to the ground that it’s difficult to stand up and get out of them. Not this one! It’s slick looking and oh so comfy!

I designed this chair with the clean lines of the mid-century modern aesthetic and specifically tailored it to fit standard “deep seat 2pc cushions” that available at décor, home center and other big-box stores. With these you can sit in comfort for hours! Standard cushion size: 5” thick, 22 ½” wide, the seat is 24” deep and the back 21” tall – these cushions typically are sold as a pair and they are sewn together.

The design pattern is available in two forms:

1. Wood Pattern Set: Actual sized pieces cut from quality ½” quality plywood to make it easy to plan your cuts. This pattern set comes with the plan and pattern guidebook that illustrates how the pieces go together and includes a fastener guide. More important, with the wood pattern set, both the arm braces will be provided in full size, 1 3/8” (thick) cedar or pine to provide a better guide for aligning your saw to achieve the required compound miter cuts. All other pieces are simply reflected from one side of the chair to the other.

2. Paper Pattern Set: Actual sized pieces, traced, and labeled (with all pertinent angles noted) onto a sheet of brown Kraft paper. This pattern set comes with the plan and pattern guidebook that illustrates how the pieces go together and includes a fastener guide.

The chairs I made (in photograph) are from a wood that is new to me – African Edinam – but absolutely beautiful when finished with an outdoor oil sealer. Wood thickness id 6/4” planed to 1 3/8” for most of the piece and the seat bottom and back supports are from 4/4” planed to 3/4”. However, like most woods used outside, it will take some care to keep the elements from getting the better of it over the years.
