The two halves compress around the pole with a durable plastic component, and flex allows for slight pole variations and a snug fit. This allows it to be installed without taking the umbrella apart, and for it to be locked into various height positions

Cedar is naturally weather resistant. Purchase it unfinished to let it patina/finish it yourself, or finished with a non-toxic clear topcoat for additional protection.
